If you have ever suffered from lasting back pain and other related symptoms, you know how disruptive it can be to your life. Spinal decompression therapy is a specialized treatment option. Here’s what you need to know to help you decide if it’s right for you.

What Is Nonsurgical Spinal Decompression?

Nonsurgical spinal decompression is a type of motorized traction that may help in relieving back pain. We apply a gentle stretch to the spine in a precise and graduated method until spinal decompression is reached.

This changes the amount of force exerted on the spine, which helps take pressure off of your spinal discs. Spinal discs are the gel-like cushions between the vertebral bones in your spine.

People who have had this treatment say that they have seen a substantial amount of improvement over time. The negative pressure from this form of therapy may cause a bulging or herniated disc to retract, which helps take pressure off of the structures and nerves in your spine. One of the largest benefits of nonsurgical spinal decompression is that it helps promote the movement of water, oxygen, and nutrient-rich fluids into the discs so they can heal.

Doctors have successfully used nonsurgical spinal decompression to treat:

  • Back or neck pain
  • Sciatica (pain, weakness, or tingling that extends down the leg)
  • Bulging or herniated discs or degenerative disc disease
  • Worn spinal joints (called posterior facet syndrome)
  • Injured or diseased spinal nerve roots (called radiculopathy)

How Is Spinal Decompression Performed?

The patient will remain fully clothed during the treatment process. He or she will either lay supine (on back) or prone (on stomach) depending on the protocol utilized. The doctor will place one harness at the superior aspect of the pelvis and the other harness around the trunk, just below the rib cage. Once the patient is secured on the table, the pelvic harness is connected to a computerized head and the treatment process will begin slowly, creating a negative pressure inside the targeted spinal disc.

Research has shown that an 18 to 24-visit protocol is warranted to provide maximum benefit and lasting relief. When treating the lumbar spine, the pull weight will start at 30% of the patient’s body weight, increasing every third to fourth visit until 50% of the patient’s body weight is reached. If the cervical spine is the target area, the pull weight will begin at 10% of the patient’s body weight, increasing until 20% of the body weight has been reached.

Treatment may last 30 to 45 minutes and you may require 18 to 24 treatments, over five to seven weeks. Before or after therapy, you may have other types of treatment, such as:

  • Electrical stimulation (electric current that causes certain muscles to contract)
  • Ultrasound (the use of sound waves to generate heat and promote healing)
  • Heat or cold therapy
